Spot on as always. Thank you for this one. Yes. The big ugly bill will affect all of us. And just in time when more folks will be suffering from the debilitating effects of COVID needing care. I predict a tsunami of bankruptcies due to medical costs. Lately I’m losing sleep over my mom’s future care as she has dementia and currently running down her savings in a private care facility. I’m looking to move her and apply for Medicaid before the end of the year. I honestly don’t know what to expect!
I'm hoping it turns out okay for you. Many of us saw these nightmares coming. Every single family who supported this bill (or didn't) now face an even greater possibility of financial ruin, just because one of them lived long enough to need care.
I read an article about MTG in RT News-Russia yesterday about her new bill to outlaw weather machines and cloud seeding. But then, consider where she's from and the people in her district. I've been there and they are the epitome of the stereotypical Appalachian hillbillies.
In the broader context, the poll a couple of weeks ago reporting that just under half of all Americans asked in this survey had no idea what was in this bill or they hadn't even heard about it. For them, life today is the same as it was yesterday, and they want tomorrow to be the same as today. They aren't quite sure how all of this is going to effect them but they trust Trump and company to take care of them and that's all that matters. Meanwhile, life remains the same for them, day in and day out, until it doesn't, as the people in central Texas are realizing right now.
The most insidious part of this, is the fact that these cuts don't start until the end of 2026. As we know, most Americans don't think too much past tomorrow. Next week is an abstract, to be dealt with when it gets here. The same with these health care losses. People are aware of these cuts but until they actually start hitting peoples wallets, they won't pay much attention until then.
There is already one republican representative trying to push an amendment through to revert the new bill back to the original House version. So this is not over by any means.
Maybe we should let Marge pass her weather machine ban. It “prohibits the injection, release, or dispersion of chemicals or substances into the atmosphere for the express purpose of altering weather, temperature, climate, or sunlight intensity.”
Sounds like it might make fossil fuel power plants, which “disperse chemicals into the atmosphere,”illegal.
Who knew MTG was such an environmentalist and wanted to ban cars and other things that require oil and gas, since they obviously change the weather by emitting excess CO2. right? These people are ridiculous and I'm sorry for everyone affected by that stupid bill.
Thank you for your well-researched explanation of the effects of the cuts to Medicaid, Jessica. The people who most need to learn from your reasoning probably won't, because they are, as you say, idiots. That term is not simply a perjorative, since it describes a type of behavior, as you defined.
Twentieth century German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer described the concept of stupidity, and its dangers. His essay is reproduced here:
As someone who actually lives in Texas, in the flooded area, and yes, lots of people here support the president, don’t, just don’t. All of Texas is somber, families have been devastated and others have lost their sons, daughters, grandchildren, children and in one case a whole family. This was a freak flood, in less than 30 minutes devastation occurred, besides the loss of life, whole communities are gone, roads and bridges gone, and now, we have people turning this into a political hit on people who voted for trump, turning a tragedy into a political ammunition. I am asking that people refrain from this type of political sniping it serves no one. Yes we are a divided country whether we wish to acknowledge it or…not. It will take so little these days to start a situation where we all lose more than one can imagine.
Please don't take offense, Angie but Trump is not directly guilty of "murder".
Don't get me wrong! The recent decision to DOGE the NWS is a grave mistake, but this is another example of what our good friend Jessica has written about before, is some folks discount the effects of any given tragedy because they forgot that we prepared for them before they happen.
Then the cranks say " Well, it wasn't so bad". Idiots...
I just want to express my limited understanding for Trump voters.
My mom is full MAGA.
My mother. The one person in this world (second only to my wife) for whom I would willingly die. I love my Mom!
I feel lucky to have had her in my life. It's a debt I can only attempt to repay.
She's not a bad person but she's a racist proponent of eugenics. I'm joking...
But sometimes she sounds like she is, after all the brainwashing from right wing media.
Jesus said to love our neighbors and bless our enemies. I've taken a while to let that advice sink in.
I think it's time (by whatever paradigm) and make it real.
Reading this was like watching a lightning bolt give a TED Talk. The idiots yelling about weather machines while voting to gut Medicaid are the same ones who think compassion is a liberal conspiracy. It’s not just idiocy—it’s a theology of self-destruction. Thank you for reminding us that ancient philosophy had more clarity than most modern policymakers, and that what MAGA calls “freedom” is often just the freedom to ignore everyone until the floodwaters rise.

You’ve done it again. Great synopsis.

They have to. Otherwise it means Drumpf murdered all those people in Texas. Which he did.

We can try, at least...
Don’t threaten me, troll.
