They live in a fantasy world. I expect the various tenants will end up killing each other after a few months. As far as their security forces, "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?" (Who watches the watchers?) These rich fools will likely be locked out of their own bunker, if they can even get to it. They remind me of little boys playing soldier between their club houses. Then again, reality seems to play little part in their worlds. 🙄 NASA worries about the mental and emotional toll on well trained crews traveling to Mars, which is only about 18 months one way. They think they're going to potentially stay in them far longer? Good luck with that.
They also seriously underestimate how long they might have to stay in them. Most I've heard of talk about five years. It could easily be far longer than that, given deadly toys like biological weapons (such as modified anthrax), which can live for decades in the soil and travel for hundreds of miles on the wind. Then there's dirty nuclear weapons that deliberately seed long lived isotopes in fallout. I could go on, but it's a dead and deadly end. ☠️
I agree. I wonder how many of them stockpiled N95 masks and then went full anti-masker, somehow bridging the irreconcilable views that pandemic diseases are simultaneously cooked up in secret labs but also harmless. Jokers...
This is actually the post, and the associated response sentiment, that made me upgrade to paid :)
IMO it’ll be groups of security, IT, and engineering teams that will successfully rebel in plutocrats’ compounds - too much relies on high tech systems (computer, electrical, plumbing/sewage/water, etc.) for any one of those groups to be left out.
One might try to stage a coup, but unless they get support from the other 2, it’ll fail (and possibly collapse the compound if their set of critical skills is lost).
So I gain more joy than one ought to (perhaps) knowing that the people who created most of the messes from which they need shelter - the plutocrats - likely won’t survive long before those 3 groups collude to oust them.
Where that leads along the spectrum of communal vs tyrannical governance, at least Elon and friends won’t be enjoying themselves… and maybe that’s enough.
I planned to build my bunker in the Enriskjeften range in Queen Maud Land (“the Wolf’s Jaw.”) No worries about neighbors there. But there were logistical challenges. I thought about settling near the North Pole, but

So, I'll stick with my basement in Iowa, which is super convenient when the tornado siren sounds.
I'm surprised nobody has made a caper movie about a billionaire bunker. Mad Max meets Ocean's Eight.
On May 1st 1992 Rodney King <apparently> uttered what would be a timeless quote following the LA riots in the form of "Can't we all just get along" ?
The answer in 2024 is still the same, even more so "No."
