The 1918 narrative sounds too familiar. The only way to find out the truth of what's going on is to read the scientific press. Oddly enough, the veterinary press is also a good resource. I can see the worst of the reactions to a pandemic happening again given MAGA.

I told our adult children that I think modern technological civilization has about 50-100 years to run unless there are drastic changes. That may be too optimistic.

We have a generator piped into the natural gas line from our utility company. We can't afford solar, at least not yet. I'm storing nonperishable food and just ordered a set of SmartStraws and a pitcher, plus many refills.

Humans as a species are very forgetful. Much like the other animals in the animal kingdom. Humans do have a larger capacity to remember things but prefer not to. Especially traumatic memories. Pandemics are on the rise, as noted here, and humans will do as they always do. Ignore it until the death count gets high enough. The governments don't care about anything other than losing power.

The best thing we can do as individuals, is to use what resources we have to save ourselves and survive. When the mortality rate goes up again as it did in 2020, all we can do is watch from a distance, with our masks on and air purifiers running, disinfectant at the ready, and do all we can to avoid whatever virus is decimating populations.

I am slowly working on putting away food stuffs that will keep for months at a time, to accumulate enough to last months and months once the grocery stores become empty again. I am saving up enough money to install a battery storage system for my solar panels for when the electrical grid goes down. Water might become an issue but I am still researching methods to get around not having potable water pumped to my house. I don't live in a rural environment so having a well is not an option.

Life on earth is going to become harder to manage in the near future between climate changes and viruses decimating whole populations. If I am blessed by the Gods, I may have another 20-25 years left here in middle earth and during that time, I fully expect to watch major changes in societies and governments take place and not in good ways. I expect to witness a lot of death before it is my time to go on to the Summer Lands of my ancient ancestors. I just hope my children and grandchildren don't go ahead of me because of climatic weather events or pandemics.
